Dominate Corperate message reaction

In andys class we started looking at dominate corperate messages. To anyone who doesnt know what that is, its pretty much what corperations, and companies influence us to buy and do to be accepted in our life, and essentially make our life more meaningfull. The first thing which we looked at were music videos. I watched the kanye West "good life" music video. With the given question i came up with answers:
1. What is the song basically saying about how to live a good life?
The song pretty much says in order to have a good life you need the best things in it. He is saying he has those things and he is living the good life. Things he talks about are money, fame, and also beutifull women. Also he does bring in the idea of being an individual, but its not a good life if you dont have money, fame and good looks. So you can only be accepted as an individual if you have those things.

2. What lyrics particularly speak to that perspective?
one line in which he said "and watch the money pile up, the good life" stood out to me the most. This is because throughout the song hes listing things that make his life good, and make people llife good, and "watching money pile up" iis a big thing heard from him and also other entertainers. Its kinda like making money without working to hard, and it just shows that wealth is what makes people happy.

3. How do the video images support, re-orient, or challenge the dominant theme of the lyrics?
The images in the video were like all black and white, then the words he was speaking were all big bubbly and in bright colors. Mostly that made me think that they were put there to make the viewer feel good. Bright colors like yellow and red were put in big cartooney bubble letter to make the viewer feel good, and give off the whole idea of a "good life". Also there are parts in which he throws cartoon diamonds. Thus showing the money aspect of a good life. Also he mentiond the of the richest most popular cities, new york, hollywood, and miami. All those places also give off the idea of having a "good life"

4. What else do you notice that's interesting?
Things that i noticed were interesting was how alot of times the words were backwards as if kanye west were looking at them, and not the iewr. I think that just shows that hes living the good life, and the viwer isnt. Thus making the viewer want what kanye has.

Another thing that we had done was go to the library and look at magazines. When looking at magazines i tried to look at magazines i dont usually look at. One magazine i looked at was 17 magazine. It is a prodominantly female magazine. While looking at all of the advertisements i found that it was targeting only woman, and things that happen to women at young ages. An example is that there where over 5 advertisements for tampons, and different types of tampons. There were also insturctional advertisements talking about how you can find the perfect bra at a specific shop. While looking at a mostly male magazine, i looked at sports illustrated. Most of the advertisements were targeted for older men. There were things like rogain, and also alot of car and tire advertisements.

In conclusion the advertisements shown in magazines and tv are mostly put to target a specific viewer in which they think will be watching, and reading what they promote in. These advertisements make us think that when we purchase these items our life is better, and they make our life better, when in fact they are just items that give us that little happy high.
